The Ordinary Routine for Beginners in Pakistan: A Simple Morning and Night Guide

If you have just discovered The Ordinary, the range can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of bottles that look almost identical, named after ingredients most of us never learned about at school. The good news is that you do not need many of them. A simple routine with four or five well-chosen products will do more for your skin than a shelf full of serums used at random.
This guide walks you through a beginner routine that works for most skin types in Pakistan, explains what each step does, and shows you how to add actives safely once your skin is ready.
The four basics every routine needs
Before you think about acids or retinol, get these four steps right. They are the foundation that every other product builds on.
- Cleanse. A gentle cleanser removes sunscreen, sweat and pollution without stripping your skin. Squalane Cleanser suits dry and normal skin and removes makeup well; Glucoside Foaming Cleanser is a light foaming option if you prefer a fresh feel.
- Treat. One serum aimed at your main concern. For most beginners that is Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (oily skin, pores, blemishes) or Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (dryness and dehydration).
- Moisturise. Even oily skin needs moisture, especially when you start using actives. Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA is light enough for humid weather but comfortable in winter too.
- Protect. Daily sunscreen is the single most important step in a hot, sunny country like Pakistan. Without it, dark spots get darker and actives can do more harm than good. Finish every morning with a sunscreen such as Mineral SPF 30.
A simple morning and evening routine
| Step | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Cleanse | Gentle cleanser | Gentle cleanser (twice if you wore heavy sunscreen or makeup) |
| 2. Treat | Niacinamide or Hyaluronic Acid | Same serum, or nothing extra for the first two weeks |
| 3. Moisturise | Light moisturiser | Moisturiser |
| 4. Protect | Sunscreen (always) | Not needed |
That is it. Use this for two to three weeks before adding anything new. It sounds slow, but it lets you see how your skin reacts, and it is the fastest way to avoid irritation.
Which serum should you start with?
Oily or combination skin
Start with Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. It helps with the look of shine, visible pores and blemishes, and it is light enough for Lahore and Karachi summers. Apply a few drops after cleansing, morning or night.
Dry or dehydrated skin
Start with Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. Apply it to slightly damp skin, then follow straight away with moisturiser so it holds water in your skin instead of pulling moisture out of it, which matters in dry winter air.
Sensitive skin
Keep things very simple: cleanser, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, moisturiser and sunscreen. If your skin often feels red or reactive, Soothing & Barrier Support Serum is a gentle addition. Leave strong acids and retinol until your skin has been calm for several weeks.
When and how to add actives
Once your basics feel comfortable, you can add one active ingredient at a time, about two weeks apart. Always add actives in the evening and keep wearing sunscreen every morning. Our guide to skincare for Pakistan’s weather explains how to adjust this through the seasons.
- For dullness and rough texture: a gentle acid such as Lactic Acid 5% + HA, or Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner if your skin is not sensitive. Start twice a week.
- For clogged pores and breakouts: Salicylic Acid 2% Solution, two or three evenings a week.
- For dark spots and uneven tone: Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA or Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%.
- For fine lines: a gentle retinoid such as Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion or Retinol 0.2% in Squalane, two nights a week to start. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Do not use an exfoliating acid and a retinoid on the same night. Alternate them instead, and give your skin at least one night a week with no actives at all.
Five beginner mistakes to avoid
- Buying too much at once. If you start five products together and your skin reacts, you will not know which one caused it.
- Skipping sunscreen. Acids and retinol make skin more sensitive to the sun. Without sunscreen you can end up with more pigmentation, not less.
- Using acids every day. More is not better. Over-exfoliation shows up as stinging, redness, tightness and sudden breakouts.
- Mixing everything together. Some actives work against each other. See our guide on what not to mix before you layer.
- Buying from unreliable sellers. Fakes are common in Pakistan. Learn the warning signs in our guide How to Spot Fake The Ordinary Products.
How long before you see results?
Hydrating products like hyaluronic acid make skin feel more comfortable within days. Products for oiliness and texture usually take four to six weeks of regular use. Dark spots and fine lines take longer, often eight to twelve weeks, and only if you protect your skin from the sun.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best The Ordinary product for beginners?
For most people, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (for oily skin) or Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (for dry skin) is the best first serum. Pair it with a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and daily sunscreen.
Can I use niacinamide and hyaluronic acid together?
Yes. They work well together. Apply niacinamide first, then hyaluronic acid, then moisturiser.
How many The Ordinary products should a beginner use?
Four or five is plenty: a cleanser, one treatment serum, a moisturiser and sunscreen, and later one carefully added active.
Is The Ordinary good for Pakistani skin?
The Ordinary works for all skin tones. The main things to adjust for in Pakistan are heat, humidity and strong sun, so choose light textures in summer, more moisture in winter, and never skip sunscreen.
